Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Cut stale bread into 1-inch cubes or slices.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine dairy-free milk, brown sugar, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and black salt. Whisk well and let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Grease an 11x6 inch casserole dish. Scatter or press bread evenly in the dish, then pour custard mixture over the top.
  4. Let the casserole soak for at least 30 minutes. For optimal flavor, refrigerate overnight.
  5. Prepare the optional topping by mixing flour, chopped nuts, vegan butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  6. After soaking, sprinkle the topping over the casserole and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Cool slightly before serving warm with maple syrup or fresh fruit.
